RISE YES is a research project dedicated to understanding outcomes for youth during the middle school transition.
The Importance of the Middle School Transition
New peer relationships and social dynamics.
For many students, this can be exciting, but it can also be challenging. This period is when students may experience changes in motivation, school engagement, and emotional well-being.
Understanding the factors that help students stay engaged, feel supported, and build resilience during this transition may help youth thrive both academically and emotionally.
The transition from elementary school to middle school is an important developmental period in a child’s life. Students experience changes in their emotional development, academic expectations, social environments.
Children transitioning to middle school often encounter:
Increased academic demands and more independent learning, with greater expectations for responsibility, and independence.
Multiple teachers and classrooms, requiring increased organizational, time-management and planning skills.
The RISE YES Study
The RISE YES study is designed to learn more about school engagement and factors that promote academic success and healthy social emotional outcomes across the transition from fifth grade to middle school for girls and boys.
Results from this study would/will help us develop measures and treatments for children to promote resilience and academic success.
Our long-term goal is to use these findings to inform programming designed to enhance student engagement.
